Despite what some may tell you, there is no perfect kit, and every kit should be further customized by its owner. This means adding prescription medications, copies of important documents, extra cloths and blankets (especially for areas that may experience especially cold weather), and other items specific to the kit owner.

Also, in a major catastrophe or the dreaded "long emergency", it is likely that basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment, and telephones may be cut off for a prolonged period. As a result, in addition to having a good 72-hour emergency kit, complete preparedness demands that survivors plan to do without basic services. Such preparations cannot be satisfied with any kit.
